Your fashion accessory is not complete without your confidence. Whether or not braces are categorized as cosmetic dentistry depends on the person and the purpose fare getting braces. There are many significant reasons to get braces.

What are Dental Braces

Dental braces are devices used in orthodontic treatment to correct irregularities in teeth or a misaligned jaw. Adolescents often use corrective dentistry. However, more adults are getting braces for misaligned teeth.

Braces are made of ceramics or metal and wires. Braces are attached to the teeth with bonding material. Generally, braces are very effective, but their effectiveness depends on the patient’s ability to follow their orthodontist’s guidelines carefully.

Braces & Cosmetic Dentistry

When it comes to a point when you start to get self-conscious about the appearance of your teeth, you can get braces to improve your smile. When you do this, you simply go through a cosmetic procedure. Braces not only help you improve the appearance of your smile, but they can also improve your self-image and confidence, significantly improving your overall health.

Quick results are the major appeal of cosmetic dentistry. When properly done, cosmetic changes will give you a youthful, beautiful smile, repair worn or cracked teeth, and improve your oral health. Cosmetic dentistry is best suited for dental issues that require immediate attention. From repairing chipped or broken teeth to repairing to reshaping or bleaching or reshaping your teeth and solving deep staining, cosmetic dentistry has proven to be very beneficial to oral health. However, cosmetic dentistry solutions do not affect your original teeth.

Cosmetic dentistry is recommended for children because their jaws are still growing, and teeth are still coming out. In this case, braces will be a better choice.

Braces & Orthodontics

Orthodontics deals with preventing, diagnosing, and treating dental/facial issues. You can get braces to address the issue if you have a dental problem needing correction, such as misaligned teeth. Braces used to fix dental problems are a necessity. Some such dental issue includes:

Impaction

Crooked teeth

Gum disease

Tooth decay

Crowded teeth

Underbite

Overbite

Braces can help you align your teeth and also correct overbite or underbite. These are cases when braces are used by orthodontics to prevent and correct irregularities in the teeth of patients for functional reasons. Dental issues like these put extra pressure on your teeth and make it hard to maintain good oral hygiene.

Orthodontic treatment provides greater health benefits than improving the teeth’s aesthetic appearance. This branch of dentistry comes with slower treatments of the teeth. Dental braces on the teeth will be orthodontic if it is not to improve your smile.

Do I need Braces?

The answer to this question depends on your situation. Braces are a cosmetic treatment procedure if you are self-conscious about your teeth and want to improve your smile. However, if you have a dental problem that needs to be corrected to improve your oral health, you need to see an orthodontist.

No matter your reason for considering braces, it is essential to consult with a qualified orthodontist to find out if they are the right choice for you.

What are the Different Types of Braces

Today, there are numerous types of braces available in the market. The type of brace that is right for you will depend on your situation. The following are some of the most common types of braces:

Metal Braces: Metal braces are the most commonly used type of braces. They are made of high-quality stainless steel and are extremely strong. Metal braces are less expensive than other types of braces, but they are more noticeable.

Ceramic Braces: Ceramic braces are less visible than metal braces because they are made from clear or white ceramic brackets. Ceramic braces are more expensive than metal braces, but they are less likely to discolor your teeth.

Invisalign or Clear Aligners: These are clear, plastic aligners that are virtually invisible when worn. Invisalign is a popular orthodontic treatment option, but it is also one of the most expensive.

Lingual Braces: These are metal braces that are attached to the back of your teeth and are completely invisible when you smile. Lingual braces cost more than other types of braces, but they are also less visible.

What is the Cost of Braces?

The price of braces varies according to the type of brace you select and the severity of your dental problem. Metal braces are less expensive than other types of braces, but they are also more noticeable. The price ranges between $2000 and $4500. Ceramic braces are less visible than metal braces because they are made of clear or white ceramic brackets. They are, however, more expensive than metal braces, with prices ranging from $3000 to $5000.

Invisalign is a popular orthodontic treatment, but it is also one of the most expensive, with prices ranging from $4000 to $6000. Lingual braces are metal braces that are attached to the back of your teeth and are completely invisible when you smile. However, they are more expensive than other braces, with the cost ranging from $5000 to $6500.

No matter what type of brace you choose, it is essential to consult with a qualified & experienced orthodontist to find out if they are the right choice for you.

Side effects of Braces

The side effects and risks associated with dental braces depend on your brace type and severity. People who are allergic to metal are likely to experience hives or rashes. Wearing braces worsens gum disease because wires and brackets irritate the gums. Irregular brushing and flossing can result in tooth decay.

Which treatment is right for me?

The right treatment depends on your needs. During your visit to your Cosmetic Dentist, your dentist in Somerville and the dentist in Medford, Massachusetts will properly evaluate you to determine your dental issues and know whether or not braces will benefit you. After evaluating your jaw and teeth, your dentist will briefly discuss the outline of your treatment.

If you want to improve the appearance of your teeth, consider a cosmetic dental procedure. But if you have something you would like to correct in your teeth, you should consider a functional procedure such as dental braces at First Dental.
A dental crown is a practical technique to restore the form and function of a tooth. When talking about dental procedures, the phrase “crown” is frequently used. A cap or covering composed of different materials is a prosthetic crown that conceals a portion of an existing tooth or post. There are many different uses for a crown. Crowns can be used to reinforce or cover up a cracked or weak tooth.

In addition to strengthening dental bridges, crowns could also be used just for aesthetic purposes. One might create a whiter or straighter smile by having crowns fitted onto their natural teeth. There are several dental situations where teeth capping can be utilized on children as well as adults. Because there are so many uses for crowns, it stands to reason that there are several materials from which to choose.

Why would I need a Dental Crown?

You may need a dental crown for several reasons, including:

Protecting a weak tooth (possibly from decay) from breaking or keeping the weak tooth together if parts of it are cracked.

Restoring a broken tooth or a severely worn down tooth.

Covering and supporting a tooth with a large filling and not much tooth remaining.

Holding a dental bridge in place.

Covering misshapen or severely discolored teeth.

Covering a tooth that’s been treated with a root canal.

Let’s examine the many types of Dental Crown materials in more detail below:

Metal Crown

Let’s begin with the most resilient substance. A Teeth Crown made of metal is the most robust and has the longest lifespan of any material kind. Gold, alloy metal, or even platinum, usually nickel, are the most common metals. The teeth bridgework can be strengthened greatly by using these crowns. The usage of this kind of crown has the drawback of potentially harming neighboring teeth.

Additionally, a real smile does make the metal disappear. Due to their unsightliness, metal crowns are often reserved for use on the molars and back teeth.

Porcelain or Ceramic Crowns

A ceramic or porcelain crown is an excellent alternative for those who might be allergic to metal. It lacks metal and has the most organic appearance. You can color the ceramic or porcelain to match your natural teeth closely. The back or front of the mouth can therefore use ceramic or porcelain crowns. This alternative is less dependable than metal crowns and may eventually chip or shatter.

Metal Crown with a Porcelain Fused Crown

Combining metal and porcelain is a fantastic alternative to each material alone. The strength and longevity of a metal crown can be obtained along with the beauty and aesthetics of a porcelain crown by choosing porcelain fused to a metal crown. The main drawback to the bridgework of this kind of crown is that with time, the porcelain may start to show through the metal hue. Some patients claim to have noticed the top metal line along the gum line as the crown becomes permanently affixed.

All Resins Crown

A crown made entirely of resin is among the less expensive options. These crowns can be tinted to fit the color of the natural teeth, just like porcelain or ceramic ones can. Unfortunately, these crowns are the most brittle and susceptible to fractures, cracks, and chips. They need to be updated fairly frequently as a result.

Zirconia Crown

Zirconia is used for the production of all kinds of ceramics, including dental restorations. It is a white crystalline oxide made from the metal zirconium. Zirconia crowns are more aesthetically pleasing and less likely to fracture than PFM crowns. These crowns require fewer dental visits and take less time to install. Your dentist can cut, shape, and permanently cement the zirconia crown without sending it to a dental laboratory. Zirconia crowns are also less expensive than metal crowns. They are extremely accurate because dentists create them from digital scans.

What’s Involved in Getting a Crown?

Be prepared to visit your dentist a few times if you require a custom-made crown. Unless the dentist has a CEREC® or comparable system that enables patients to receive the crown in a single visit, it is not something that can be done in just one appointment.

Additionally, the method may vary depending on the kind of teeth crown. Getting a crown typically entails:

The tooth is prepared by the dentist, who may perform a root canal or just remove the decay.

They take a mold to ensure that the crown fits your tooth precisely.

A temporary restoration is used to keep the tooth intact until the crown is ready. To keep this temporary cap from cracking, you should take extra caution and refrain from consuming very hard or sticky items.

The dentist would have the crown available in approximately a week.

How Long do Dental Crowns Last?

On average, dental crowns last between five and 15 years. The life span of a crown can depend on the amount of “wear and tear” the crown is exposed to, how well you follow oral hygiene practices and personal mouth-related habits. These mouth-related habits can include things like:

Grinding or clenching your teeth.

Chewing ice.

Biting your fingernails.

Using your teeth to open the packaging.

How Much Does a Dental Crown Cost?

Dental crown prices vary depending on where you live and the type of crown you choose. For example, porcelain crowns are typically more expensive than other types of crowns, which are typically more expensive than porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. Dental crowns can cost anywhere from $800 to $1,500 or more per crown. Crowns are not usually fully covered by insurance. Check with your specific dental insurance provider to be sure.

Conclusion

An effective long-term restorative procedure is a crown. That implies that you will have a dental crown in your mouth for a very long time. Of course, you want it done by experts like dentist Somerville most effectively and professionally.

Therefore, if at all possible, avoid going to the dentist who is the least expensive without first assessing your options when comparing dental crown types and costs.
General Dentistry is not an exception; every profession has advantages and disadvantages, whether or not it is related to medicine. Most often, the only negative thing people have to say about dentistry is the debt from dental school. However, no matter how important that one item is, it always manages to overshadow the several additional challenges dentists deal with on a regular basis.

As you can probably guess from the outset, the answer to the headline of this article is that, yes, working as a dentist can sometimes be quite stressful. However, it has become one of the most satisfying.

What Does Being a Dentist Mean?

Dentistry requires a doctorate in dental medicine, dental surgery, or both. The identification, prevention, and treatment of diseases and conditions of the oral cavity are the main medical specialties of a dentist, sometimes known as a “dental surgeon.” Offering oral health services is aided by the dental office’s support team. The dental team is composed of dental hygienists, dental assistants, dental technicians, and, in some cases, dental therapists.

Graduates can still operate as general dentists in a variety of dental specialties if they choose not to pursue more specialized dental training. For instance, a graduate could start their own general practice, join a group practice, join the military as a dentist, work in a public health center or hospital, etc. The bottom line is that people who graduate from dentistry school have several possibilities for either immediate or future employment.

Why Is Dental Work So Stressful?

Dental work can be stressful for an ordinary dentist and a cosmetic dentist due to several variables. Following are some of the main pressures that cosmetic dentistry and dentistry experience.

Management of time

Time management is a major factor of stress for dentists. Working long hours as a dentist can be extremely stressful and demanding, which requires great time management. Every patient needs the dentist’s undivided attention, but as time passes and one grows weary, it can be challenging to offer the greatest care.

Because of this, several dentists frequently put in extra hours on the weekends. It’s impossible to predict if a patient will experience an emergency or have a bad reaction to surgery. It implies that the dentist must always be accessible to the patients. Imagine waking up on a Sunday night with a terrible toothache. Who else is going to assist you besides your dentist?

Impacts on Mental and Physical Health

According to studies, one of the medical specialties with the highest physical demands is dentistry. Although we picture, our dentist treating our teeth while relaxing in a chair, the position whereby the dentist works can be quite taxing.

The dentist must be set up to operate carefully and laboriously while keeping their hands stationary in the air for an extended amount of time. They need to maintain adequate back support, leg placement, and overall body stability during all of that in order to avoid making any rash hand motions that could harm the patient. The back, arms, and shoulders suffer as a result of all of this.

Costs of Dental Practice

Owning a dental office is expensive. Dentists frequently bring their student loan debt from dental school and the cost of operating an expensive dental practice with them to work. Of course, we won’t pretend dentists don’t earn well or have steady jobs, but even the highest-paid dentists may occasionally find that the expenses of maintaining a dental office are too high.

Conclusion

Dentistry has perks and downsides, just like any other job, including dentist Somerville. Unfortunately, prospective dentists frequently focus their attention on the negative aspects. We want to wrap up this piece on a happier note. With all this in mind, you can now decide whether or not you are interested in studying dentistry. Many patients fear root canal therapy will be unpleasant, but emerging modern technologies and anesthetic alternatives have ensured that root canals are a painless operation for the most part. Today’s patients are more than six times more likely than those who have a tooth extracted to regard Root canal treatment as painless!

Although most patients will have a painless experience when treated by a Root Canal specialist, it’s still crucial to grasp its advantages before deciding what you should do. This decision is regularly prompted by pain in the mouth, usually caused by an inflamed and infected tooth. After the examination indicates that the tooth’s pulp is infected, the patient must decide.

What is the definition of a root canal?

A root canal is a process that ensures the removal of the inflamed and diseased pulp from a tooth’s inside. The inside of the tooth is cleaned and cleaned after the pulp has been removed. Next, the dentist fills and closes the tooth with gutta-percha, a rubbery substance. Lastly, a restoration component such as a crown or filling is placed on the tooth to allow patients to chew and bite normally.

Root canal therapy aims to remove bacteria from an infected root canal, avoid reinfection, and save the original tooth. The inflammatory pulp is removed, and the tooth insides are meticulously cleaned and disinfected before being filled and sealed. Under anesthesia, the entire procedure is carried out, ensuring that patients remain at ease. They can resume their normal life once it’s been completed.

What are the benefits of this treatment?

What are some reasons why patients and endodontists alike prefer root canal therapy? The following are among the most important advantages:

Preventing Tooth Loss

The infected pulp is removed during the process of the root canal. The next steps are cleaning the afflicted area and filling the cavity with a polymer substance or fitting the tooth with just a crown. Crowns are necessary for restoring the appearance of teeth. As a result, anytime they are employed in a root canal, they restore the tooth’s functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Tooth extraction, on the other hand, will ensure that there are gaps between teeth, which can lead to some complications. Patients who undergo a root canal don’t have to worry about losing their teeth, which helps to keep their teeth in their natural position.

Helps Prevent the Deterioration of the Jawbone

A root canal ensures the diseased tooth is kept intact, unlike tooth extraction. As a result, this procedure offers an alternative to having the tooth pulled. Due to microbial exposure and other factors, the jawbone degenerates when teeth are lacking. As a result, root canal treatment aid in preventing future jawbone issues.

Improves Oral and General Health

Individuals with serious tooth decay and long-term toothaches are prevalent dental diseases. They cause discomfort and, in the worst-case scenario, tooth loss. As a result, a root canal helps preserve teeth in good shape while avoiding more invasive operations like tooth extraction and giving a complete smile makeover. A root canal can assist increase general health by preventing diseases linked to poor oral health and preserving good oral health. Cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, diabetes, and gastrointestinal infections are examples of such illnesses. As a result, the individual’s dental and overall health is improved.

Conclusion

Although these two acronyms are frequently used interchangeably, they are very different. TMJ is an abbreviation for temporomandibular joint, while TMD, which stands for Temporomandibular joint disorder, is a condition that affects the jaw joint. TMJ relates to the joint alone, whereas TMD refers to problems marked by swelling or displacement of the TMJs.

What is Temporomandibular joint disorder?

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) refers to a condition that encompasses a wide range of problems affecting the TM joints, facial nerves, and jaw muscles that control jaw movement. TMD is caused by a damaged or misplaced TMJ (temporomandibular joint). When your jaw is misaligned due to trauma or crooked teeth, the TMJ’s daily functions can become unpleasant, resulting in various ailments that can harm your entire body.

TMD affects up to 15% of the population of the United States, causing chronic facial discomforts like jaw pain, headaches, and earaches. It is the most frequent non-dental cause of chronic facial pain. TMD can be caused by problems with the temporomandibular joints, bones, muscles, or discs, producing pain and other unpleasant symptoms. Over time, such symptoms may also intensify and improve.

What is the temporomandibular joint?

The TMJ, or temporomandibular joint, is a small and delicate joint positioned directly beside each of your ears. It joins the jaw to the skull and enables us to chew, speak, and open our mouths. The joint is vulnerable to injury, inflamed, or irritation since it is small and sensitive. It will stop working properly if this happens. You may have pain and discomfort during chewing or speaking.

The jaw connects the TMJs; therefore, their appropriate function is dependent on each other and the teeth. Because your TMJs rely on various factors to function properly, it’s no surprise that TMJ disorders (TMD) are so frequent. Because it moves, translates out of its socket, and moves from side to side, the TMJ is perhaps one of the most complicated joints in the body.

What are the causes of Temporomandibular disorders?

In several cases, the exact source of this illness is unknown. The excess strain upon the jaw joints and the muscle group that regulates eating, swallowing, and speech is sometimes the main cause. This tension could be caused by bruxism. The uncontrollable clenching or crushing of teeth is known as bruxism. Temporomandibular disorders can be caused by trauma to the jaw, head, or neck.

TMD pain can also be caused by arthritis and disk displacement in the jaw joint. Other painful medical conditions, such as fibromyalgia, may overlap with TMD pain. Clinical, psychological, sensory, genetic, and neurological system components have been identified in a recent study by Craniofacial Research and the National Institute of Dental that may put a person at a higher risk of developing chronic TMD.

Symptoms of the Temporomandibular disorders

The symptoms of the temporomandibular disorder include:

Whenever you chew, talk, or exhale through your mouth wide, you may experience pain or tenderness around the face, neck, jaw joint, and shoulders.

If you try and open your mouth wide, you run into problems.

Jaws will become “stuck” or “locked” in an open or closed mouth

As your mouth opens and closes as you eat, you may hear a clicking, cracking, or grinding sounds in the jaw joint. It could be painful or not.

Treatment of Temporomandibular disorders

The TMD Treatment may include custom-fitted bite appliances, such as a Temporomandibular joint mouth guard, and recommended stress management strategies. The TMD Specialist will discuss some basic lifestyle modifications that may assist, such as taking fewer plates of food, biting only on one side then perhaps the other, eliminating gum and especially hard or chewable foods, and eating well to aid joint healing. It’s also essential to pay attention to your posture and sleeping position.

What makes hypertension so dangerous is that it can result in other secondary disorders such as cardiovascular disease and heart failure, kidney failure, blindness, and transient ischemic attacks or stroke.

There are three varieties of hypertension. The most common is chronic hypertension, characterized by having a higher-than-average blood pressure most of the time. The second is acute hypertension, characterized by temporary but very high blood pressure. The final variety of hypertension is white-coat hypertension which is usually the variety given to patients who only appear to be hypertensive in the presence of their doctors.

To diagnose hypertension, you will need to have two blood pressure readings over two separate visits that show higher-than-average blood pressures on both visits. Undergoing dental procedures like teeth removal in Somerville with high blood pressure can be very dangerous, and we’ve discussed the reasons below.

Dental Blood Pressure Guidelines

Regardless of the procedure, a dentist will not perform a procedure or dental work on an individual with systolic or diastolic blood pressure higher than 180 or 109. This is because the risks associated with any dental procedure are far higher when individuals have high blood pressure.

For example, in a dental procedure like tooth extraction, removing the tooth results in bleeding within the gums. This bleeding can be extremely dangerous and detrimental in individuals with high blood pressure.

Why Does My Dentist Take My Blood Pressure At Every Visit?

You may have noticed that more and more dentists today provide blood pressure checks at every visit instead of when your dentist might simply refer to your chart or ask if you were on any blood pressure medication. You might wonder why. This is because undergoing dental procedures can cause your blood pressure to spike higher, leading to dangerous medical situations in individuals who already have high blood pressure before dental work.

Common causes of the spike in blood pressure during dental work may include:

Patient’s anxiety about the procedure

Pain that the patient may experience during the procedure

Local anesthesia: Local anesthesia applied by dentists to numb the mouth can cause an increase in blood pressure. Note, however, that the anesthesia itself does not increase blood pressure. What causes a spike in blood pressure is the presence of substances such as epinephrine in anesthesia, as epinephrine can raise blood pressure.

One significant advantage of regular blood pressure screening is that high blood pressure can indicate another serious medical condition that usually remains undiagnosed while still at its earliest stages. This condition is diabetes mellitus, and over 66% of people with diabetes mellitus usually have high blood pressure. Regular blood pressure screening can lead to early diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus.

What Happens If My Blood Pressure Is Too High For Tooth Extraction?

If your dentist discovers that your blood pressure is high before tooth extraction in Somerville, the procedure will be placed on hold. This is because undergoing a dental procedure like a tooth extraction with high blood pressure dramatically increases the risk of a heart attack or a stroke. There is extra work on the heart to get blood to your organs, and as the blood is significantly thicker, it can easily occlude blood vessels and cause potentially life-threatening blockages.

Your dentist will refer you to your primary care physician to manage your blood pressure with appropriate medication. Your dental work can continue successfully once your blood pressure falls back to normal levels.

Learn More About High Blood Pressure and Dental Treatment

If you want to learn more about high blood pressure and its effect on dental treatment, you’d like to undergo a dental procedure. Still, if you’re not sure of your current health condition’s impact on your safety, make an appointment with your Somerville dentist or call (617) 623-8489 or (781) 395-0300 today. People get veneers to close gaps or spaces between the teeth, re-align dentition, cover chipped or cracked teeth, and correct tooth appearance. Other reasons may include; teeth whitening and dental contouring. For most people, veneers assist in boosting their self-esteem previously damaged by bearing skewed or crooked teeth.

The Types of Veneers

Composite resin and porcelain are the two most commonly used materials in the veneer procedure. After consultation, the dentist selects what type of veneer will be convenient for the patient.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are strong-thin shells placed on the sides or tops of the teeth. They are often designed in the laboratory and then fixed on the teeth. This procedure would require two separate visits. During the first visit, the dentist snips a small amount of enamel from the teeth, creating space for the veneer installment, and other data like the natural tooth color are sent to the lab for examination. During this period, temporary teeth veneers are placed on a patient’s teeth from the time it takes the lab to operate, which is usually 1-2 weeks. When the veneers are ready, it is checked for possible modifications after which it is bonded to the teeth.

Resin Veneers

Resin or resin-based composite veneers possess a form of similarity to porcelain veneers in that they are less expensive and demand less enamel removal occasionally, none at all. Resin veneers are often easier to replace in cases of sudden damage in contrast to porcelain veneers. To install a resin veneer, the dentist would first clean and reshape the tooth then a thin layer of composite material is added to the prepped tooth. Necessary adjustments are made to fit the individual’s preferred look while giving it a natural feel and still heralding the patient’s aesthetics.

Differences between Porcelain Veneers and Resin Veneers

Porcelain veneers are more pricey compared to resin-based composite veneers. However, there are several other differences between the two.

Porcelain Veneers

Requires enamel

Requires more than one visit to the doctor

Porcelain veneers are highly stain-resistant

More durable

After installation can last for 10-15 years

They are irreversible and difficult to fix

Resin Veneers

It may not require enamel removal

Usually wrapped up during one visit to the doctor

More likely to stain compared to veneers

Less durable, prone to chipping away

Requires replacement between 5-7 years

Can be undone and are easier to fix

Dental veneers are an option for patients with superficial issues, but they are technically challenging. They are usually resorted to by patients who fail to respond to other dental treatments like braces and want a long-lasting solution to their dental crises.

Porcelain Veneers And Laminates

Laminates are thinner, are as thick as a contact lens, and are a more advanced alternative to porcelain veneers. It can also be done in a single visit and are more expensive, with almost the same benefits and functions as porcelain veneers. It doesn’t require much enamel removal, which compels a less natural look from the outcome.

Uses of Veneers

Dental veneers are a long-lasting solution to tooth problems. They can be used to remedy broken or chipped teeth. They also help cover a discolored tooth and fix alignment issues. Patients can get only one veneer, but most people get a range of six to eight veneers to form an even, simultaneous smile, making the upper front teeth the most common veneer-applied layer. Most people struggle with social activities due to low self-esteem, but veneers have been the saving grace for dental patients.

Veneers are strong and supportive, and although they are a cosmetic solution for discolored or smaller than-average teeth. Veneers change the appearance of the teeth and are sturdy enough to last for years. This treatment can be irreversible. They range in both cost and durability and last longer with periodic maintenance. The veneer installment process is usually painless. This is a result of the procedure being minimally invasive. Veneers need a tooth to be bonded to, so a missing tooth may hinder the possibility of getting veneers done.

While everyone wants healthy teeth and gums for a beautiful smile, clean, fresh breath, and self-confidence, many people do not put in the effort it takes to maintain their dental hygiene.

All it takes is to floss daily, brush your teeth twice every day, eat healthily, and make regular appointments with the Somerville dentist to ensure everything is alright. Learning about dental problems, especially the most commonly encountered ones, can help you identify early symptoms and prevent them altogether. Here are the 9 most common dental problems, their causes, and what you can do about the

Tooth Decay (Cavities)

Cavities are one of the most frequently discussed dental problems in adults and children. They occur when plaque from food with a high sugar content settles on the surface of your teeth, feeding the bacteria in your mouth. As the bacteria continue to feed on the plaque, the outer protective layer of your teeth, the enamel, will start to wear down.

Cavities are formed as permanently damaged areas on the tooth’s surface, leading to tiny holes. Ultimately, this could lead to tooth decay, and it is not restricted to any age as even infants can get cavities.

Symptoms include toothache, tooth stains, tooth sensitivity and pain when eating or drinking cold or sweet things, and visible holes in the teeth. Cavities can be effectively prevented by avoiding food and drinks with high sugar levels, practicing proper dental care, drinking more water, and visiting the Dentist Somerville regularly.

Bad Breath

It might be a severe condition if you notice that you or someone else constantly has bad breath even after brushing. Also medically referred to as Halitosis, Bad breath can be highly embarrassing and significantly impact your life.

This oral problem is common across all age groups and is often a sign of other underlying dental problems. Because there are so many things that could cause bad breath, it’s often challenging to pinpoint the cause and solution. However, there’s no need to panic. Visiting a trained dentist will provide you with all the answers to your questions. Avoid assuming that mouthwash will be your solution. Often, mouthwash masks the smell but doesn’t address the actual cause.

The most common reasons for bad breath include gum disease, cavities, oral cancer, and certain foods like ginger, onions, garlic, and others.

Gum Disease

Gum disease often occurs in three stages. You have the first called gingivitis, which is reversible and characterized by inflammation of the gums. If left untreated, it will worsen to the second stage of gum disease, known as periodontal disease.

This comes with more severe infections and inflammation of the gums and bones surrounding and supporting the teeth. The gums have already become swollen and red and begin to bleed at this stage. If still left untreated, the condition worsens to advanced periodontal disease, where the teeth start to fall out, and pus starts to accumulate around the base of the teeth. Gum disease must be identified and treated quickly.

Cracked, Broken, or Chipped Teeth

Cracked, chipped, or broken teeth are the most common dental injury suffered by millions. From chipping a tooth in an accident or brutal fight to having a more serious underlying condition, chipped or cracked teeth may result from several reasons.

A dentist will first assess how badly chipped the tooth is and determine what treatment is needed. If the chip is large, they may recommend a crown replacement or bonding with a strong resin material to replace the chipped-off part. If the tooth’s pulp is already at risk, you may be advised to get a root canal and get a veneer or crown.

Receding Gum Line

This is the exposure of a tooth’s root as the gum line recedes further upwards or downwards and doesn’t cover the tooth as it should. This condition can be caused by several things and is usually a sign of underlying problems such as high blood pressure, genetics, and abnormal hormonal fluctuations.

Receding gums could also cause tooth loss if left unaddressed and can also be caused by poor oral hygiene, smoking, and brushing too hard. Dentists often treat first by roughly cleaning the teeth, showing you how to brush correctly, and, if alarming, a gum graft surgery.

Root Infection

Root infection is a pretty serious condition, and if you’ve ever heard of or tried a root canal treatment, you might have an idea of how painful it can be.

This condition occurs when bacteria attack the root of your tooth, make their way into the middle of your tooth, and attack the pulp tissue. Symptoms first begin as a mild toothache that many dismiss as nothing serious. An abscess will eventually form when left untreated as the root infection has progressed to a more severe stage.

You may require a root canal procedure which will be performed under anesthesia. It involves the dentist drilling a hole in the middle of your tooth and filing or grinding away the damaged surface to reach the root. Once the root is accessible, they’ll use a special suction tool to suck out the abscess (pus and other infected tissue). The opening will finally be sealed with a hardening material, and you’ll be allowed to recover.

Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is a common dental issue that affects millions of people worldwide. It is often characterized by sharp pain or discomfort while eating, drinking, speaking, and even brushing. It could result from a cracked or abscessed tooth, both of which must be examined and treated by a dentist.

If left untreated, tooth sensitivity can worsen and lead to tooth loss or infection around the teeth, gums, and the bones supporting the teeth. If you develop tooth sensitivity suddenly, quickly pay a visit to the dentist for treatment.

Crooked Teeth

A large percentage of people you see at the dentist’s come to discuss and treat the alignment of their teeth. Having crooked teeth or an abnormal bite can significantly affect your smile, self-confidence, and overall dental health.

Fixing crooked teeth isn’t just for kids, as adults may decide later on to get their teeth professionally aligned. This is mainly done with metal braces, trays, aligners, and retainers

Staining or Discoloration

Like nearly every other part of your body, your teeth need to be cleaned regularly! Many people suffer from tooth stains and discoloration, often caused by different things. Sometimes, it could be a sign of a more serious underlying condition, and other times, it could result from strong-staining medications, foods, and beverages like coffee, tobacco, and tea.

You can primarily address this with over-the-counter whitening products or pay a visit to the dentist for a more thorough approach.

It’s scarce to have a porcelain veneer require a root canal treatment, meaning that your dentist may have provided you with crowns instead of veneers. Nevertheless, if you find yourself in this situation, here is all you need to know about protecting a porcelain veneer during a root canal treatment.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers, also known as dental veneers, are thin, custom-colored shells used to cover the front part of the teeth. These veneers are fitted to aesthetically alter the teeth’ color, length, form, and size. Dental veneers are an excellent option to improve your overall appearance and offer you a beautiful smile without the invasiveness of dental implants.

Veneers are typically made of two materials: Porcelain or resin. Porcelain dental veneers are more common and recommended than resin dental veneers because they are more resilient and can resist stains and discoloration. Porcelain veneers also better mimic the natural teeth’s light-reflecting qualities.

Why Do People Get Porcelain Veneers?

There are quite a few reasons anyone might want to get porcelain veneers. These include:

Wanting a more beautiful smile

If you are not satisfied with how your smile looks, getting veneers is a great way to achieve your dream smile. You may simply have a crooked smile or not be pleased with how your teeth are aligned. Getting a dentist’s opinion can help determine if you are fit to get veneers and a smile makeover.

Cracked or chipped teeth

Teeth can crack or get chipped for numerous reasons, such as obsessively grinding teeth (a common symptom of anxiety), chewing or biting hard foods, and injuries to the mouth such as a punch. If you have cracked teeth for any reason and are displeased with the appearance, you may consider veneers.

When talking, smiling, or laughing, you may feel embarrassed about your chipped, cracked, or worn-down teeth. Veneers are a great option to get your confidence back and improve your appearance.

Gaps in Dentition

Some people love and appreciate gaps and spaces between their teeth. However, some people may also dislike them as the gaps may affect how they smile and interact with other people. These people may want to change and fix the gaps in their dentition, thereby opting for porcelain veneers.

Tooth discoloration or stains

Lots of things could cause tooth discoloration. From the types of food and beverages you consume to certain illnesses, medication, and even aging, anyone can get discoloration and stains on their teeth.

If you have discoloration, you can speak with a dentist and consider your options. Sometimes, over-the-counter whitening strips, toothpaste, and other products just don’t work, and in cases of severe discoloration, veneers are often the best option.

Why Do People Need a Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal treatment is standard in dental care and is mainly performed when the inner part of the tooth, i.e., the pulp, is injured, inflamed, or infected. This could be due to different causes such as thorough tooth decay resulting from untreated cavities, chips in the tooth, an overload of dental practices on a particular tooth, and a direct injury to the tooth.

This treatment is typically carried out with the help of local anesthesia by a general dentist or endodontist. They will begin by administering an anesthetic near the affected tooth, then follow up by removing the tooth’s pulp through a small opening made with special tools at the tooth.

Next, they’ll clean out all the tooth’s canals, and if it’s needed, the dentist will apply an antibiotic to prevent reinfection. The final stage is to temporarily fill up the tooth with a soft sealant material to protect the canals.

How Can You Protect A Porcelain Veneer During A Root Canal Treatment?

You’re right to be worried about protecting your veneers during root canal treatment. It’s commonly said that a root canal treatment can make your teeth look darker, and considering you’ve gotten translucent veneers, the discoloration will show.

Luckily, this can be prevented. The darkening is often caused by remnants of the soft canal filling material inserted into the tooth during the root canal procedure. The remnants are often trapped in the crown of the tooth, and as such, your dentist will carefully clean out all the filling material from the crown, then place a fiberglass post into the root.

Finally, they’ll fill the remaining space with a light-colored composite material instead of the former filling material. This will. Keep your porcelain veneers white and in pristine condition for years! However, it’s always important to see your dentist at least once a year to examine if you have cavities, gum disease, or if you need a dental implant.

Over time gum disease deteriorates your jawbone and it won’t be strong enough to support an implant. To complete an implant procedure, your gum tissue has to be thick and wide enough to handle an implant.

Don’t fret, there are different options available for you if you require dental implants, it just takes a little time and patience on your end. Most people are eventually able to get dental implants following a few steps.

Gum Disease Weakens Tissue Bones

However, there is another route you can take. Even with your gum disease, you could be a candidate for a soft tissue graft and after you’ve healed, you’ll be in a better position for a dental implant.

You won’t be able to get dental implants if you have gum disease. Your gums have to be strong and healthy before that procedure can be done.

Gum disease is fairly common, but it isn’t something to mess with. Without proper dental care, it can lead to some serious issues, such as tooth loss or a lot of pain. If your gums are weakened, then it makes it harder and less likely for a dental implant procedure to occur.

Dental implants are designed to replace lost teeth, but your dental implants can also get infected, which is a disease called peri-implantitis. It’s similar to periodontal disease and affects the bone around infected implants.

Signs of Gum Disease

Dealing with the long-term effects of gum disease isn’t fun. And early on you won’t notice a lot of pain even in the advanced stages of periodontal disease. That’s why it’s important to regularly visit your dentist so they can keep an eye out for early signs.

However, some signs include bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth that you can’t get out. Or gums that bleed when you brush or floss can be signs of gum disease. A more serious sign can be receding gums, teeth that seem to be loose, and pockets between your teeth and gum.

More signs or symptoms include a receding gum line, pus in between your teeth, and feeling like your teeth are swollen. It’s possible to have gum disease and not have any symptoms shown.

You should see your local dentist if you notice any of these issues.

Ways to prevent gum disease:

Create solid brush and floss habits

Quit smoking or vaping

Have a healthy diet

Talk to your dentist about preventative treatment

Floss at least twice a day

Use fluoride toothpaste

Gum disease occurs when plaque and tatar build-up damages the gums, which then breaks down the soft tissue and the supportive alveolar bone. If left untreated, gingivitis develops into a more advanced issue called advanced periodontitis.

Of course, gum disease can be avoided by always practicing good hygiene. Make sure you visit the dentist twice a year, use mouthwash regularly, floss daily, and brush your teeth at least twice a day. Another lifestyle change you can make is limiting the amount of sugary foods you consume and staying away from tobacco.

How To Fight Gum Disease

There are ways to treat gum disease. Periodontal therapy can help treat gum disease over time and provides a non-surgical option for gum disease. These gum disease treatments can help restore your teeth and gums, as well as prevent tooth loss.

Surgical options for gum disease:

Gum grafts

Gum flap surgery

Root planning and scaling

To avoid surgery depends on the severity of your gum disease. Most mild to moderate cases can be treated with root planing and scaling, which involves cleaning off the plaque from the tooth’s surface and underneath the gums. This procedure also involves smoothing down the root, which stops the bacteria from creating future infections.

The more severe cases will of course require surgery to help restore your gums. Some options include gum grafts, which are used to protect the root of your tooth when your gums have receded too far and give a smile makeover. The recovery time period after the procedure is usually one to two weeks for your mouth to fully heal. Gum flap surgery is also another route you can take. Essentially your gums are cut and folded back so that the roots underneath them can be cleaned.
